[…] Deviance is also to be found in Jérôme Bel’s production which pays no heed to any cultural references and was performed at the Théâtre de la Bastille. In it naked bodies of all ages uttered timorous cries with irony, tenderness or cruelty. It was not the cry of times gone by, but just a murmur and the writing that was scratched on the wall at the back of the stage. Thus a framework was created which, remote from a world that is “armed” and equipped for conflict dared to admit its own frailty. Deviance always targets that which is flawed no matter how small it may be. When we were leaving, still under the discreet spell of something deviant, something new at a time when the world is dominated by stereotypes, Descartes’ words came to mind.
